Just Walk Out: The App that Beat Amazon

How do you create a brand new shopping experience that involves no checkout? Not by breaking all the rules, but by creating the rules for a market segment that has never been seen before.

This project demonstrates a full detailed case study of product design working at every level from hardware, industrial design to physical kiosks and to web, tablet and mobile apps that were created using a brand new paradigm.

Task

Create the most robust and adaptable no-checkout system, and the best user experience which involves only a single interaction.

Intro

We’re changing the way people think of shopping.

The JWO system employs hundreds of cameras spread throughout the store to track individual users as well as groups to track items being picked up, and builds a receipt of total purchase in real time. Once the purchase is finished at the kiosk, the system finalizes the receipt and sends it to the user.

No lines, no fuss. Simplicity and delight powered by computer vision.

Challenges

Research in Action

Through continuous iteration, wireframing and live prototype testing with real users with video and analytics gathering, I was able to hone in the experience to be the industry leading paradigm and smoothest possible.

Behind The Scenes

Annotation: The engine that powers JWO

The leadership suite and myself identified improvements to the annotation suite as the biggest area for competitive gains. Using the DOKR framework and applying service design principles, Iled the design and product teams in overhauling the annotation engine to a more efficient system.

The improvements resulted in more than 50% cost and time savings, and faster annotation due to lower error rate and user frustration and fatigue.

Mind Meld

Using moderated group sessions, design thinking and other creative methods, the best ideas are brought forward.

These ideas are then rapidly iterated upon, combined and synthesized using the SCAMPR framework to get them ready for prototyping.

Hardware and Industrial Design

The JWO hardware is just as important as the apps and software. I worked with the hardware manufacturer to produce several prototypes of the hardware to ensure a premium but rugged platform that performs well and has high visibility.

Real world testing then refined the final design before signoff.

The Results

JWO Today

01.

Widespread use at airports

Thousands of users everyday benefit from cashier free stores in airports while shopping for electronics, food and more.

03.

Digital ID

States are adopting and rolling out digital ID that was pioneered in the JWO app and accepting digital ID as equivalent to physical counterparts.

02.

Major retail presence

Aldi, Circle K, BP, Chevron and more carry the tech and are now serving brand new customer segments.
